If you feel a little ashamed of having taken a self-indulgent selfie despite not being a 14-year-old girl, don’t stress too much. In fact, you’re in good company. Of course, the Ellen Degeneres star-studded selfie from the Oscars, which broke a Twitter record with over 3.4 million retweets, is one for the ages. But others who have been caught in the selfie act include His Holiness, a space-walking astronaut, and world leaders. And Oxford Dictionaries recently named “selfie” as 2013’s Word of the Year.

So to all the selfie haters out there: If it’s good enough for Bill Gates, then it should be good enough for you!

ISS Selfie

Aki Hoshide, astronaut with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, took a spectacular selfie last year when performing work on the International Space Station. The dark of space contrasted with the brightness of the sun over Hoshide’s shoulder along with the reflection of the ISS and Earth in his visor make this one a winner.

Colin Powell was taking selfies before many of us were born. He also looked much cooler doing it than many of us.

Distruptive Selfie

During the final game of the 2013 College World Series, a trio of young women ran onto the field and were quickly apprehended by security. But not before a few classic selfies were taken.

The Omaha, Nebraska ladies tweeted their plans to run out onto the field if their followers would chip in $1,500 to cover the fines that would be doled out following their mid-game antics. Apparently the quota was met, as Kayleigh Hill, Emily Hill, and Torrie Hill made their way to the infield during the sixth inning, phones in hand.

World Leaders Selfie

World leaders from far and wide converged at Nelson Mandela’s funeral to celebrate the life of the anti-apartheid revolutionary including Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt who snapped a selfie with US President Barack Obama and UK Prime Minister David Cameron. Michelle Obama was looking none-too-pleased, however. Perhaps she knew the image would soon be the top post on SelfiesAtFunerals.tumblr.com.

Survivor Selfie

After a Cessna plane went down off a Hawaiian island, passenger Ferdinand Puentes decided to document the ordeal using his GoPro camera. What resulted was a harrowing selfie depicting Puentes floating in the Pacific Ocean waiting for help to arrive, as the crashed airplane bobs in the water behind him.

A Meryl Streep and Hillary Clinton selfie. Arguably the greatest actress of our time posing with one of the most influential females in U.S. politics.
