If you feel a little ashamed of having taken a self-indulgent selfie despite not being a 14-year-old girl, don’t stress too much. In fact, you’re in good company. Of course, the Ellen Degeneres star-studded selfie from the Oscars, which broke a Twitter record with over 3.4 million retweets, is one for the ages. But others who have been caught in the selfie act include His Holiness, a space-walking astronaut, and world leaders. And Oxford Dictionaries recently named “selfie” as 2013’s Word of the Year.
So to all the selfie haters out there: If it’s good enough for Bill Gates, then it should be good enough for you!
Aki Hoshide, astronaut with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, took a spectacular selfie last year when performing work on the International Space Station. The dark of space contrasted with the brightness of the sun over Hoshide’s shoulder along with the reflection of the ISS and Earth in his visor make this one a winner.

World leaders from far and wide converged at Nelson Mandela’s funeral to celebrate the life of the anti-apartheid revolutionary including Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt who snapped a selfie with US President Barack Obama and UK Prime Minister David Cameron. Michelle Obama was looking none-too-pleased, however. Perhaps she knew the image would soon be the top post on SelfiesAtFunerals.tumblr.com.
After a Cessna plane went down off a Hawaiian island, passenger Ferdinand Puentes decided to document the ordeal using his GoPro camera. What resulted was a harrowing selfie depicting Puentes floating in the Pacific Ocean waiting for help to arrive, as the crashed airplane bobs in the water behind him.
